Cambodian premier says he will attend ASEAN summitPhnom Penh  - Cambodia's prime minister will attend next month's summit of the Association of Sout East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in neighboring Thailand despite hinting last week he would boycott the meeting, media reports said Monday.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said last week that attending this year's series of ASEAN meetings would be too costly and time consuming, but Foreign Minister Hor Namhong told The Phnom Penh Post newspaper that the premier definitely would attend.

Cambodian leader seeks to expand rice market to Gulf

PhnomCambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Penh - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday that he would visit the Gulf states of Kuwait and Qatar in January to discuss rice exports in a bid to corner the Gulf market.

"Those countries have oil but no rice," he said in a speech carried on state radio during a rice-planting ceremony about 40 kilometres south-west of Phnom Penh. "I think the Gulf can become our rice market."

Cambodia has been exporting low-grade rice to African countries, such as Guinea, and is muscling its way toward being a major regional rice exporter.

Prime Minister Hun SenPhnom Penh  - Cambodian Muslims must be integrated into the community and their religious restrictions and needs universally respected, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Thursday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new mosque, Hun Sen called for religious tolerance and acceptance of Muslims, who make up just a small percentage of the population but have been part of Cambodian culture for centuries.

"Some countries prohibit Muslim uniforms in schools. Cambodia allows it ... it is up to the individual," he said, in reference to headscarves sometimes worn by Muslim women.
