Preneet Kaur winsChandigarh: Congress leader and former union minister Preneet Kaur on Monday won the Patiala Assembly seat defeating her nearest SAD rival Bhagwan Dass Juneja.

Kaur, wife of former chief minister Amarinder Singh, won by a margin of over 23,282 votes, an election office spokesman said.

The seat fell vacant after Amarinder got elected to Lok Sabha from Amritsar.

Patiala seat was retained by Congress.

Kaur polled 52,967 votes, SAD nominee Bhagwan Dass Juneja 29,685 and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harjit S Adaltiwala 5724 votes.--PTI

India to collect biometric data for visas: Preneet Kaur

Preneet-KaurNew Delhi, Feb 6 : Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs Preneet Kaur has said India will collect biometric data of foreign nationals applying for visas to visit the country.

Kaur informed members of parliament in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha yesterday that the government has launched a pilot project in the Indian Consulates to collect the biometric data of all foreign nationals applying for visas to India.

Biometric procedures have been started in a phased manner in Indian missions and posts abroad.

India reschedules Sudan Lines of Credit of over $0.5 bn

Preneet-KaurNew Delhi, July 25 : India Thursday agreed to reschedule its existing Lines of Credit (LoC) to Sudan totalling $566.9 million.

According to an external affairs ministry statement here, the agreement for India's biggest rescheduling of LoC till date was signed in the presence of Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur and Sudan's Minister of Finance and National Economy Ali Mahmoud Mohamed, who is currently on an official visit to India.

India, Malta have greater business potential: Preneet Kaur

Preneet-KaurNew Delhi, April 11 : India and Malta could expand business ties, especially in information and communications technology, pharmaceuticals, finance and research and development, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said Thursday.

"Although trade and investment cooperation has seen significant growth, it was felt that there was much greater potential which could be harnessed by businesses of the two countries... given respective strategic locations and inherent advantages of the two countries," the minister said in a statement.

Addressing the inaugural session of 'India-Africa: The Growing Partnership' of the 9th CII-EXIM Bank India-Africa Project Partnership here, the minister said India and Africa share close historical ties. "We are happy India's independence struggle was an inspiration for many countries of Africa to pursue the same," said Kaur.

Speaking on the sidelines of the India-Iceland Renewable Energy Workshop, Preneet Kaur - Minister of State for foreign affairs - said that the government was making the best possible efforts to convey its "absolute displeasure and concern" to the Australian government after the recent spate of violent incidents against Indians residing in Australia.

Saying that the government was monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis, the Minister added that all the incidents of violence against Indians, including the most recent attack on a 24-year
-old Indian taxi driver and the incident of fire in a Melbourne gurudwara, were extremely regrettable.

India to attend UN meet on South-South Cooperation  New Delhi, Nov 30 : Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur is representing India at the forthcoming meeting of the United Nations on South-South Cooperation in Kenya this week.

The three-day conference on High Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation will start Dec 1 in Nairobi.

The conference is being convened on the 30th anniversary of adoption of Buenos Aires Plan of Action for promoting and implementing technical cooperation among developing countries.

Speaking to reporters here Kaur urged Islamabad to honour its commitment to peace.

"I think that we have never wavered from the stand that we have taken. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given many statements to that effect," Kaur said.
