Planning and changes needed to make housing affordable, say Quinn
To make housing affordable to all, adequate planning coupled with provisions of smaller houses and removing red tape is needed, said Chief Executive of Stockland, Matthew Quinn.
He said that as the population of Australia keeps growing, making houses available for all is the need of the hour.
While talking during a lunch session organised by the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, he said that to be able to maintain the Australian lifestyle it is imperative that the cities are planned and designed to meet the requirements of population of Australia. It is going to be 36 million by the 2050.
Criticizing the current way of doing things, he said that the format in which the cities are at present is inadequate to meet the requirements.
The average price of a house is $485,000, which is much higher than what an average person can afford. The affordability is $330,000.
The gap can be bridged if the planning and execution are both streamlined.
He further added that all the departments of the government need to work in tandem to be able to achieve this target. This is something which is not present as of now.
