Policeman fires at fleeing bootlegger, runs into trouble

A policeman chasing a criminal on a busy road with revolver in his hand! No, this is not a scene from an action thriller from Bollywood but what actually happened at Bapunagar on Wednesday.

A police constable fired shots to stop a bootlegger running away to evade arrest. Acting on a tip-off, Bhupendra Gadhvi, a constable posted at the Odhav police station, and two of his colleagues, Hamid Aadera and Goperam, tried to intercept a car in Soni ne Chali area. While Gadhvi was in a car, his colleagues were on a motorcycle. As they signalled the car driver, an alleged bootlegger, to stop the vehicle, he sped away. Gadhvi in his Zen overtook the bootlegger's Verna car and stopped his car in the middle of the road near Sundar Complex. However, the bootlegger hit the constable's car and escaped from the spot. In the meantime, Gadhvi chased the outlaw and fired two shots from his revolver.

Later, Gadhvi lodged a complaint with Bapunagar police in this connection. However, the Bapunagar police are questioning Gadhvi's act, saying he should have informed senior police officials about the tip-off. Gadhvi has a poor record in the police department as he had been suspended once for negligence in duty and in another case charged with killing a PI's brother. The constable has also been accused of having nexus with many bootleggers and anti-social elements.
