Population control need of the hour: Health Minister Azad

Ghulam Nabi AzadThe increasing population in India is a threat to growing economy. The huge growth and development in India can not accommodate the steadily increasing population.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad highlighted the urgent need of adopting efficient measures to control population in speech on World Population Day.

The minister stressed the importance of World Population Day for country like India which has 17 percent of the world population but only 2.5 percent of land to accommodate it.

The minister cited the population explosion as the reason behind rising prices and law and order problems. He indicated that food items tend be costly when there is low production and huge demand.

He said: "To bring change, people beyond religious faith or identities will have to think about problems due to population. It also leads to law and order problem."

The Minster gave the example of national capital to demonstrate the negative effect of population growth on development of country. He explained that despite a good generation of electricity, water, harvests, and road constructions, it fails to meet the growing demand.
