Proposal to unite engineering and medicine under one roof

Indian-Institutes-of-TechnologyJohn Dewey, Philosopher and educational reformer reported that Indian Institutes of Technology should look for expanding their curricula because it will be beneficial for all. He insists that people should understand that education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. He recommended that IIT's should concentrate on what to teach, provided with official approval and taken care of operations and objectives associated with it.

IITs are India's leading higher education institutes. The proposal regarding expansion of their scope is related to patching up with higher education.

The scheme initiated by the Union HRD ministry, aimed to revise the IIT Act, to add medical courses in their curricula. Three IIT's are already considering offering medical courses.

Last year in August, with this regard, IIT-Kharagpur has taken a step forward by signing an agreement with University of California, San Diego, for a state-of-the-art hospital and a medical college, whereby they could facilitate graduation and post graduation along with researching medicine and bio medical engineering.

IIT has chosen San Diego because it expertise in the field of medical research and collaborating with this institute will bring advance medical technology to its medical education.

IIT has also introduced social sciences and humanities for the students who are involved in technical fields to expand their intellectual horizon. IIT also preferred to look alike the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which provide excellence in every field. IIT also wish to produce quality scholars in, say, linguistics, literature, political science, etc.

For introducing medicine researches in their curriculum, IIT want official approval from Medical Council of India. But struggle between the HRD ministry and Health ministry will not make it possible.

HRD ministry is accountable for higher studies and IIT's and the health ministry is responsible for medical education, and they had warned IIT to stay away from MBBS. This fight needs to be resolved as soon as possible otherwise it will hamper the project in terms of authority, accountability and raising funds.
