Queensland Fighting Hard Against Hendra Virus
Since the outbreak of Hendra virus in the Queensland, about two properties have been lifted from quarantines. It has been informed by the Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Rick Symons that two properties at Kerry have been cleared from the virus after conducting three rounds of medication for a period of 32 days.
The owners of the property are now free from the threat of being contacted with the virus. However, Dr. Symons said that precautionary measures are required to be taken by all the horse owners. He said, “Like all horse owners, the property owners will still need to remain vigilant about the health of their horses”.
This is for the first time when a property has been declared free from the virus. There are still many properties which are still under quarantines. These properties include Beaudesert, Park Ridge, Kuranda, Hervey Bay, Boondall and Chinchilla.
The Queensland Government is monitoring about 81 horses for the Hendra virus. It has been reported that about one third of the bats of Queensland are infected with the Hendra virus. The increased number of Hendra infected bats is posing a greater risk of the live of hundreds of bats. Following the increased number of infected virus, the vets are asking for the culling of the bats.
