‘Rebuked’ Symonds to play in IPL as T20 specialist

Andrew SymondsSydney, June 13 : Troubled all rounder Andrew Symonds, whose international career was dissolved after Cricket Australia withdrew its contract, will now play as a Twenty20 specialist, as he has a lucrative deal with IPL franchise Deccan Chargers and is getting offers from teams in England and South Africa.

“Andrew has taken time to work through what is important to him moving forward,” Symonds’ manager Matt Fearon said.

“He is certainly not in any rush. He has committed to cricket, lots of people have encouraged him to keep playing, he still has a lot of fans out there, which makes him feel positive. He will continue playing but what format it will be in has yet to be determined,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Fearon, as saying.

Fearon also said Symonds might not speak publicly for “weeks or longer”. Having been sent home from the team camp in England, Symonds has spent time with family and friends in the past week and by all reports is relishing his freedom away from the constraints of the Australian team environment.

CA’s general manager of cricket operations, Michael Brown, said Symonds was welcome to continue playing domestic cricket, but aside from the possibility of Twenty20 games, the 34-year-old has told Queensland he is not available.
