Police claim 20 Taliban fighters killed in western Afghanistan

AfgahnistanKabul - Twenty Taliban militants including foreign fighters were killed and 14 others wounded in western Afghanistan, while five police and a child were killed in separate incidents, officials said Saturday.

The operation started in Seya Jangal area of Bala Bulok district in western Farah province after militants attacked a convoy of Afghan and coalition forces in the area, damaging a military tank, but causing no casualties, Abdul Raouf Ahmadi, spokesman for the police forces in western region said.

Major offensive against Taliban under way

Kandahar, Aug 9 : Canadian troops seized bomb-making supplies, guns, narcotics and money during a major offensive into the northwestern part Afghanistan’s dangerous Kandahar province.

The Canadian soldiers, their NATO allies based in Kandahar, Afghan National Security Forces, and British troops from Helmand province moved into Band-E-Timour and the Maywand district northwest of Kandahar city on Sunday.

The offensive is taking large number of coalition forces in Kandahar further from their base than they normally venture and marks one of the rare times they have conducted a joint operation with the British next door, globeandmail reported.

UK to send more troops to Afghanistan

AfgahnistanLondon, Aug. 8 : More troops may be sent to Afghanistan to help fight the Taliban, British Defence Secretary Des Browne has hinted.

Military chiefs have been in discussion to almost double troop numbers in Afghanistan, the Telegraph reports.

Senior military officers have held preliminary talks about troop strengths and believe increasing numbers up to approximately 14,000 from the current 8,200 may be necessary to defeat the Taliban.

Coalition soldier, four Taliban killed in Afghanistan

AfghanistanKabul - A US-led coalition soldier was killed in a roadside explosion in western Afghanistan, while international forces killed four suspected Taliban militants in the south, the military said Friday.

The soldier was killed when the convoy he was traveling with struck a roadside bomb on Friday morning, the US military said in a statement.

The military did not disclose the name and nationality of the dead soldier or the exact location of the incident. Most coalition soldiers are from the United States.

US commander alleges ISI’s complicity with Afghan militants

Washington, Aug 8 : A top US commander in Afghanistan has reportedly publicly accused Pakistan intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of “complicity” over time with militant groups fomenting violence in Afghanistan.

Lt Gen David McKiernan''s comment reflects growing US frustration over the insurgent violence in Afghanistan, reported The News.

“Do I believe that the Pakistani government must do more? I absolutely do. Do I believe there has been some complicity on the part of organizations such as the ISI over time in Pakistan, I believe there has been,” the paper quoted McKiernan as saying.

Pak consulate staffer accused of aiding Taliban to weaken Afghan govt

Kabul, Aug 7: Afghanistan’s spy agency - the National Directorate of Security has reportedly accused a member of the Pakistan consulate in Kabul that he was proving aid to the Taliban to weaken the Afghan government.

Without disclosing the name of the Pakistan consulate staffer, the spy agency maintained that he gave “orders and money” to Mullah Rahmatullah, a Taliban militant in the region who was captured earlier this week.

The spy agency added that this information was gathered during the interrogation of a Taliban militant captured by Afghan intelligence agents on Tuesday.
