Coastal security goes ‘indigenous’

The Coast Guard has found an unexpected ally in naked tribesmen carrying bows with poison-tipped arrows in the Andamans.
The last of the Jarawas, a Negrito tribe that travelled to the Andamans from Africa around 60,000 years ago, are providing vital tip-offs to help Coast Guard bust Myanmarese poachers.
Andamans’ Coast Guard Chief Kripa Nautiyal said, “Jarawas give us leads on poachers from Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River entering reserve tribal areas. We have made more than 40 arrests and nabbed several boats in separate operations.” Only 270 Jarawas inhabit the Andamans.

Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Sep 4 : Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on Friday unveiled a vision document for the strategic development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the year 2020.
Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Security and Development of the Andaman and Nicobar islands’ here, Dr Kalam said that a 250 mw nuclear power station on one of the islands would form the core of the development programme.
Quake of slight intensity rocks Andaman Island

Port Blair (Andaman Islands), Aug 15 : A moderate intensity quake measuring 5.3 on Richter Scale rocked the Andaman Islands this morning.
According to the met department, there was no immediate report of any damage.
It was the third earthquake in this week to hit the islands.
A moderate tremor hit the islands on Thursday, while a high-intensity earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale shook the islands on August 11. (ANI)
Earthquake shocks people in Orissa and Andaman Island

An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale created panic in the coastal regions of Orissa and some parts of Andaman Island at around 1.30 in the Tuesday morning. The earthquake has been recorded by the Indian Meteorological Department.
Meanwhile, a Tsunami alert was instantly alarmed by the IMD, but the same was withdrawn after few hours.
In a statement given by the Indian Meteorological Department, Director S C Sahu said that the earthquake was in the Andaman Sea and occurred at the depth of around 0.33 km. The earthquake took place at around 265 km north of Port Blair.
Enhanced security for Andaman and Nicobar Islands

New Delhi, Jan 9 : The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration has tightened its vigil along the coasts by establishing additional marine police outposts in view of the current security situation.
This was stated by Lieutenant Governor of the Islands, Lt. General (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas exhibition in Chennai.
The Island''s security agencies have also enhanced the monitoring of its territorial waters to check poaching and other illegal activities, he added.

According to the met department, the epicentre of the quake was located at a latitude of 10.8 degrees North and longitude of 91.7 degrees East.
There were no immediate reports of any casualty or damages. (ANI)
Quake rocks India's Andaman Islands

New Delhi - A magnitude-6.7 earthquake jolted the Andaman Islands off the east coast of India Friday, but no tsunami alert was issued by authorities, officials said.
The undersea quake struck at 5:10 pm (1140 GMT) 113 kilometres west of the state capital Port Blair, said AK Bhatnagar of the Indian Meteorological Department in New Delhi.
"The moderate quake shook the islands, causing panic amongst residents, but there are no reports of any damage or injuries," he said.
The quake were also felt in the southern metropolis of Chennai on the Indian mainland, which lies 1190 kilometres west of the islands, news reports said.
