Dhaka  - The death toll from day-long shootings by rebel troops of Bangladesh paramilitary border forces against their commanders inside the Bangladesh Rifles
(BDR) headquarters rose to five with two more deaths reported in hospitals Wednesday, officials said.

Hospital authorities said two of the dead were mid-ranking officers of the Bangladesh Army and three were civilians.

Dhaka  -At least three people were killed and more than a dozen injured as Bangladeshi paramilitary border troops rebelled against their commanders on Wednesday.

One civilian and two army officers were killed and 14 other people injured in the fighting which stopped after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed announced a general amnesty for the rebel troops.

Dhaka- At least two people were killed and 14 injured as heavy small arms and mortar fire erupted inside the central Dhaka headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on Wednesday, officials and witnesses said.

Regular army troops attempting to enter the headquarters of the paramilitary border troops were fired on and turned away by the soldiers inside the compound.

Dhaka, Feb 25: One person was killed and six others were injured after a fierce gun battle broke out between officers and personnel inside the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) here on Wednesday.

Official sources confirmed that a mutiny has taken place, and there were unconfirmed reports that the chief of the BDR, Major General Shakil Ahmed, had been killed.

According to the sources, the mutiny coincided with a meeting of senior Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) officers at the Pilkhana area headquarters.

Dhaka  - Heavy small arms and mortar fire erupted inside the central Dhaka headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles on Wednesday morning, sparking fears of a military uprising.

Regular army troops attempting to enter the headquarters were fired on and turned away by the solders inside the compound.

Witnesses said several helicopters were approaching the Bangladesh Rifles border security force headquarters but could not confirm they had been fired upon.

Regular army units and police were seen evacuating civilians from the vicinity of the central Dhaka military compound. No casualty figures were immediately available.

Dhaka  - A leader of a visiting German parliamentary delegation said Tuesday said that Bangladesh could be a role model for a political system where democracy and Islam run hand in hand.

"I think Bangladesh can be a role model ... because it is not that we have too many countries who have a majority of people of Muslim faith but also well working as a democracy," German legislator Sebastian Edathy told a press conference.

Edathy led a five-member German delegation of lawmakers from the German Bundestag to Bangladesh.

The delegation chief said Bangladesh is one of the Muslim countries where "Islam and democracy can go together very well."
