Devotees converge at Banderwah in Kashmir for "serpent worship"Doda (Jammu and Kashmir), Apr 18 : Thousand''s of devotees are visiting the Subar Nag (serpentine divinity) temple at Bhaderwah in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, as part of an annual pilgrimage.

Since thousands of years, people here celebrate the Nag festival with fervour and gaiety.

The Nag festival is considered to be very sacred and auspicious by the locals. Tourists come here from across the country to witness the festival.

Highway sinks in Doda, rescue work underway

Doda (Jammu), Feb. 8 : Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu and Kashmir were virtually cut off from rest of the state after heavy overnight rains washed off parts of a road near the Baglihar power project on Saturday.

A half-a-kilometer stretch of road between Batote-Kishtwar National Highway-1B collapsed under the weight of rising waters of the Chenab River.

Officials said four vehicles, including two trucks; an ambulance and a van were swept away. The driver of a van is missing.

A house was also buried under the debris.

Eyewitnesses said the river gradually swamped the road. Panic-stricken locals said after the commissioning of Baglihar project, the water level in Chenab had increased.

11 killed in Kashmir road mishapDoda (J-K), Nov 13: At least eleven people were killed and 15 others were injured in a road accident in Doda district on Doda-Kishtwar road in Jammu region on Wednesday.

The accident occurred when a mini bus on its way from Prem Nagar to Doda, skidded off the road and fell into Chinab river in Karada area.

Eyewitnesses said that the overloaded mini-bus plunged into a 150-feet deep gorge and landed in the river waters after hitting several rocks in the gorge.

Rescue teams were immediately pressed into action to pull the passengers out of the river water.

Baglihar dam displaced yet to be rehabilitated

Doda, Sept 21: With just a month is left for the commissioning of the first 150-mw unit of the Baglihar hydropower project in Jammu, residents in the dam''s catchment area complained that they were yet to be rehabilitated. However, officials refuted their claim.

The 450-megawatt Baglihar dam is being built on the Chenab river, which flows from Kashmir into Pakistan.

Over 15,000 families have to be rehabilitated before the dam is commissioned. People living in a 60-kilometre radius of the dam have to be relocated. But, many said they were yet to receive compensation for their land, which would be submerged.
