Wild elephants kill one in Indonesia's Aceh province

Jakarta  - A herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in Indonesia's north-westernmost province of Aceh, killing one person and destroying property, state-run media reported Wednesday.

A herd estimated at 13 pachyderms entered Cot Pengee village in Aceh Jaya district during the past several days, forcing residents to flee their homes for safety.

Antara news agency quoted local community leader Iskandar Musa saying residents tried to drive the wild animals away with traditional methods, such as making loud sounds, but to no avail.

Instead, the elephants become more bold with one of them chasing people on sight, Iskandar said, adding that the beasts killed one man whose body was found Saturday.

Political turmoil won’t affect ASEAN Summit, says official

Jakarta, Nov. 26 (ANI): A senior official of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has said that the ongoing political turmoil in Bangkok will not stop Thailand from hosting a summit of Southeast Asian nations in the northern province of Chiang Mai two weeks from now.

“The government is managing the situation and the fact that they have moved the venue to Chiang Mai is making sure it is going to be smooth and away from any pressure,” the Bangkok Post quoted ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan, as saying in a press conference here.

Indonesia braces for mass layoffs

Jakarta - Indonesia was preparing various policies aimed at rescuing the national economy and preventing mass layoffs as the world's fourth most-populous nation is battered by the global economic crisis, officials and media reports said Tuesday.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the government had prepared stimulus policies aimed at helping rescue the national economy.

Among the steps was to immediately allocate a fund of 120 trillion rupiah (9.71 billion dollars) that is currently kept in the country's central bank, Indrawati said at an Investor Summit meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Indian president leaves for visits to Vietnam, Indonesia

President Pratibha PatilNew Delhi - Indian President Pratibha Patil Monday embarked on a visit to Vietnam and Indonesia that is expected to give a new impetus to India's "Look-East" policy and consolidate ties with these countries, officials said.

"The tour is aimed at giving momentum to India's relations with the economically important countries in the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) region," a spokesman of the President's Office said.

Patil is scheduled to hold talks with the top leadership of those countries during her tour that will conclude December 3.

Strong earthquake strikes off western Indonesia Jakarta - A strong earthquake struck off the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra late Saturday. There were no immediate reports of injury and structural damage, seismologists said.

The quake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, jolted Sumatra's Bengkulu province at 11:01 pm (1601 GMT). Its epicentre lay about 142 kilometres south-west, the National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said, about 23 kilometres beneath the seabed in the Indian Ocean.

The US Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 6.8 on the Richter scale.

Indonesian police nab seven in crystal meth bust

Jakarta - Indonesian authorities have arrested two Chinese nationals and five locals for their involvement in producing crystal methamphetamine in the country, national police chief said Friday.

General Bambang Bendarso Danuri said the seven were arrested by the city police in a raid against a crystal methamphetamine factory at a rented house in western Jakarta suburb of Kebon Jeruk.

Danuri was quoted as saying by the state-run Antara news agency that officers seized 10 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally called "shabu-shabu," as well as confiscated a number of chemicals that were used to produce the banned pills.
