Jordanian premier apologizes for police beating of al-Jazeera staff Amman  - Jordanian Prime Minister Nader Dahabi apologized Friday for the beating by police of four al-Jazeera cameramen and the news network's Amman bureau chief during a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in Jordan's capital.

Dahabi made a personal visit to extend his apology to Yasser Abu Helalah, director of the Arabic television channel's Amman office, who was being treated in hospital for injuries suffered in the melee.

Amman  - Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Bashir on Saturday summoned ambassadors of the five UN Security Council veto powers and urged the world community "to shoulder its responsibilities" in forcing Israel to stop its military escalation on the Gaza Strip.

Bashir urged the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China to "move promptly to stop the Israeli aggression and violations which so far killed a large number of Palestinians," the official Petra news agency said.

"Jordan condemns this unjustified military escalation," the minister said after the launch of an Israeli land offensive after eight days of aerial strikes.
