Jammu, Aug 14 : At least ten migrant labourers were killed when a truck skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway today.

According to police, the ill-fated truck which was on its way from Srinagar to Jammu, skidded off the road while negotiating a curve at Anokhi fall near Battery Chashma in Ramban district early this morning.

The labourers are reported to have boarded the truck at Qazi gund and Lower Munda for their journey to Jammu and then onwards to Bihar.

Srinagar, Kashmir - One person was killed and three injured as an Indian paramilitary force fired on protestors Thursday in the heart of Srinagar, the summer capital of India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state, officials and witnesses said.

The gunfire broke a brief early morning calm after a night that saw thousands of people defying a curfew and rallying after local television reports said security forces had stormed houses and beat up residents, including women.

At least 23 people - all Muslims - have been killed in the region over the past three days and more than 400 injured as security forces attempted to break up demonstrations over a land row that took an anti-Indian turn.

New Delhi, Aug 14 : The Centre on Thursday called back the Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sunil Kumar Jain, from Srinagar.

More transfers are expected in Jammu and Kashmir Police. Reports said the Centre is also considering replacing Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Range) Shiv Mohan Sahai and that of his counterpart in Jammu, K Rajendra Kumar.

Jain was asked to proceed on a tour to headquarters pending transfer and no replacement for the post has been announced.

Meanwhile, the situation in the Valley continues to remain tense though authorities relaxed curfew this morning. The Army has been kept on standby to meet any eventuality. 

Srinagar, Aug 14 : After two days of aggressive violence leading to more than 20 killings, security forces relaxed curfew in six out of ten districts in the Kashmir Valley for five hours to enable people to buy essential commodities.

The curfew was relaxed in Srinagar, Gandharwal, Budgam, Kupwara, Anantnag and Kulgam districts from 6:00 a. m. to 11:00 a. m, while it was not lifted in Baramula, Bandipura, Pulwama and Shopiyan.

According to state authorities, if relaxation period passed off peacefully then it would be extended.

Kashmir valley was facing shortage of essential commodities for some time as protesters in Jammu had blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, over the issue of land transfer to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

Jammu, Aug 12 : The Amarnath Yatra was suspended again on Tuesday due to bad weather in the Baltal and Pahalgam areas of South Kashmir.

According to police officials, the pilgrimage was suspended and no batch was being sent to the shrine from Jammu.

The last batch of the pilgrims will leave from here on August 14.

The yatra was earlier suspended on Monday due to inclement weather.

It began on June 17 and will end on August 16.

Security forces have been put on a high alert along the entire route of the pilgrimage to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

Srinagar, India  - Eight people were killed in India-administered Kashmir Tuesday as police fired at groups of people defying curfew, local media and witnesses said.

Curfew was imposed across the Kashmir valley for fear of violence as the separatist Hurriyat Conference prepared to bury a senior leader who died Monday when police fired on protestors marching towards the line of control dividing India- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
