UK fund to prevent Muslim radicalization turns into a ‘gravy train’

London, Oct 26: Critics believe that the Preventing Violent Extremism Fund, which was started last year by former Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly to prevent teenagers turning to dangerous forms of Islam, is being spent aimlessly without achieving the desired objectives.

They say that large sums of money out of the Fund are being given to projects that do not meet its specific objectives, and are being handed out to community groups without councilors considering them first.

Scientists successfully grow ‘new prostate’ in mice

London, October 25: A team of scientist from San Francisco has been successful in growing new prostate glands in mice with the aid of stem cell technology, a breakthrough that may cast light on how prostate tumours develop.

The team from San Francisco were able to isolate single cells with the ability to generate an entire prostate.

During the study, the researchers isolated and transplanted back into mice a type of stem cell that divides to form different cell types in the prostate gland, located near the bladder.

The team observed that the transplanted cells developed into entirely new glands.

Amy Winehouse faces arrest after skipping police interrogation

London, Oct 25 : Troubled English singer Amy Winehouse could end up being arrested after she failed to show up for a police investigation into the allegation that she hit a reveller.

The 25-year-old is wanted by cops for questioning after Sherene Flash, 30, claimed the singer punched her in the eye when she asked for a photo at a September ball.

The Rehab singer, however, has earned herself the ire of cops by failing to turn up at London’s West End Central nick on October 22, and for not even calling them to inform that she would not come.

“She needs to show the law some respect,” the Sun quoted a police source as saying.

Atlas of underground aquifers may help avert future ‘water wars’

London, Oct 25: A new high-resolution atlas that shows where underground aquifers store vast amounts of water, may help to provide a legal framework for nations to manage water resources, averting conflicts in the future.

According to a report in New Scientist, the map is the result of nearly a decade of sometimes difficult talks between neighboring governments, mediated by UNESCO.

The hope is that it will help pave the way to an international law to govern how water is shared around the world.

Aquifers are underground layers of rocks or sediments from which water can be extracted – normally by drilling boreholes or digging wells.

Mars astronauts should stay there for life, says Buzz Aldrin

MarsLondon, Oct 25: Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, the second man on the Moon, has said that the first astronauts sent to Mars should be prepared to spend the rest of their lives there, as the Red Planet offers a greater potential as a place for habitation.

According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, Aldrin said that Mars is nearer terrestrial conditions, much better than the moon and any other place, with what appear to be vast reserves of frozen water.

“It is easier to subsist, to provide the support needed for people there, than on the moon,” he explained.
