Fehmida Mirza becomes the first female Pak PresidentIslamabad, Sept 14 : Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza became her country’s first de-facto President, as both President Asif Ali Zardari and Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro are presently out of the country.

As per Article 49(2) of Pakistan’s Constitution, the National Assembly Speaker assumes the charge of the President if both the President and Senate Chairman are out of the country.

Under the article, she will hold the office until the return of either the president or the Senate chairman, reported the Daily Times.

US expert says cross-border attacks inside Pak not a long-term solution to terror

New York, Sept 14 : An American foreign policy expert has reportedly cautioned the US administration against repeating the cross-border attacks inside Pakistan, saying this approach was “not a long-term solution to terrorism”.

“We need to get the Pakistanis to see this as their war, and that''s going to require some major new initiatives on the American side. Commando raids and Predator strikes are not a long-term solution to this problem,” said Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think-tank.

Riedel, a former high-ranking CIA and Pentagon official, said this in an interview with CFR. org, a website publication for the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

Pak Taliban take Peshswar govt building hostage, flee on security forces’ arrival

Lahore, Sept 14 : The Pakistan’s unit of the Taliban, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) made their presence felt in Peshawar city when around 100 of them took hostage a municipal building, though briefly, late last night.

The Taliban terrorists, who were said to be heavily armed, fled on the arrival of paramilitary troops without putting up a fight, the Daily Times quoted police sources as saying.

“We have vacated the building and freed the hostages but the militants have managed to escape,” said Peshawar Police Chief Sulaiman Shah.

Pakistani forces kill up to 30 militants in fresh clashes

Islamabad - Pakistani troops on Saturday killed up to 30 Islamic militants in fresh clashes with Taliban extremists along the Afghan border, a security official said.

Helicopter gunships and artillery fire pounded militants' positions in the Inayat Kaley, Rashkai, and Loi Sum areas of Bajaur district, a known sanctuary of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants launching crossborder raids on international forces in Afghanistan.

"Between 25 and 30 miscreants have died and numerous were injured in the operation during which several militants' hideouts were destroyed," said a local security official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
