Gaza - An Israeli aircraft rocketed a car driving in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah Monday morning, injuring two people, witnesses and medical officials said.

The strike comes after Israeli aircraft launched overnight attacks on the Gaza Strip, primarily along the border separating the salient from the Sinai peninsula in an attempt to target tunnels used for smuggling weapons.

An evacuated police station in the central Strip, belonging to the Hamas movement, was also hit twice, with severe damage reported.

London, Jan 31 : Former British Prime Minister and Quartet envoy to the Middle East, Tony Blair, has said that Hamas must be involved in the peace process in the region.

Blair said that in the past, the issue of the Gaza Strip had been neglected in an effort to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank.

Such an effort "was never going to work and will never work," The Times quoted Blair, as saying.

Ramallah - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Friday that he was working on sustaining the ceasefire Israel and the Palestinian factions have agreed on two weeks ago in the Gaza Strip.

He said in a news conference in Ramallah with the visiting Slovenian President Danilo Turk that "the first thing we want to do is to sustain the ceasefire."

He said that even though the 22 days of Israeli military assault on Gaza has ended, "there remains some problems we want to see end so that we can start rebuilding and providing the people of Gaza with their humanitarian needs."

Jerusalem, Jan 30 : The Palestinian Authority has accused Iran and Syria of encouraging Hamas and other radical groups to establish a new leadership that would challenge the PLO's claim to be the "sole and legitimate" representative of the Palestinians.

The PA fears that several Islamic governments that are unhappy with President Mahmoud Abbas would recognize the potential new leadership, which would be headed by Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal.
