Palestinian group in legal challenge over Britain's Israel policy

palestinianLondon - A Palestinian human rights group Tuesday launched a legal challenge against the British government over an alleged "flagrant" breach of international law in relation to Israel, including the issue of arms trading.

Al-Haq, a human rights organization based in the West Bank, lodged legal papers at the High Court in London calling for a judicial review into British government actions towards Israel.

The group accuses the British government of a "flagrant and continuing" breach of international law in a number of areas, including its record on arms trading with Israel.

Amnesty report accuses Israel and Hamas of "war crimes"

Amnesty International LogoLondon - Amnesty International has accused both Israel and the militant Palestinian group Hamas of war crimes during the recent conflict and said there is evidence that both sides used weapons sourced from overseas to carry out attacks on civilians.

A report by the London-based human rights group released Monday called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to impose an arms embargo on all parties.

Israel is accused of the illegal use of white phosphorus and other armaments supplied by the US in Gaza, while Hamas is condemned for launching unguided rockets into Israel.

Inter-Palestinian dialogue "to begin in Cairo next Wednesday"

Egypt MapGaza - An inter-Palestinian reconciliation dialogue between the rival Fatah and Hamas movements will begin in Cairo next Wednesday, a senior Palestinian official said Saturday.

Azzam al-Ahmed, head of the Fatah bloc in the Palestinian parliament, told reporters his movement had received an official invitation from Egypt to join the dialogue.

The Gaza-based Ramattan news agency also quoted an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official as saying Cairo had issued invitations to the Palestinian factions.

Palestinians lay down demands of Netanyahu

Benjamin NetanyahuGaza/Ramallah - The Palestinian Authority on Saturday called on a Likud-led Israeli government to recognise previous peace agreements on the occupied territories, as Benjamin Netanyahu appeared set to become Israeli prime minister.

Netanyahu was asked on Friday to form a coalition government by Israeli President Shimon Peres, despite his Likud party falling one seat behind the Tzipi Livni-led Kadima party in this month's elections.

Two Palestinians killed "on mission to capture Israeli soldiers"

Israel MapGaza - Two Palestinians were killed early Saturday outside Gaza City during what family members said was a mission to kill or capture Israeli soldiers.

The family sources said Yaqoub and Ahmed Nassar were affiliated to the radical Islamic Hamas organisation but had cooperated with Israeli intelligence until Hamas discovered this nearly a year ago.

Hamas had then assigned the two to carry out a suicide attack against Israeli soldiers on the pretext of fleeing Hamas and trying to cross into Israel.

Hamas says prisoners being kept in secret jails

IsraelGaza City - The Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip said on Saturday that it is holding a number of prisoners in an "alternative detention facility," following the destruction of Gaza's central prison by the Israel military in the recent conflict in the Strip.

Islam Shahwan, a spokesman for Hamas police forces in Gaza said that the prisoners were "jailed for being involved in clannish fighting and attacks on public institutions."
