Polish PM steps aside in power struggle over EU summits

Prime Minister Donald TuskWarsaw - The Polish president will attend an upcoming European Union summit alone, TOK FM radio reported, after the prime minister said he would yield his place at the Brussels negotiating table in the latest round of their tense power struggle.

"I will inform the president if he's decided he must go to Brussels, then I will yield," Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently said, adding he would inform President Lech Kaczynski about the government's stance on issues to be discussed at the November 7 meeting.

Poland flagNew Delhi, Nov 3 : Polish Defence Minister Bogdan Klich arrives here on Tuesday on a three-day visit to India to explore possibilities of tie-ups with Public Sector Undertakings for joint production as New Delhi looks for partners in the realm of military hardware.

Besides a delegation level meeting with Defence Minister AK Antony, Klich will hold talks with the chairmen of top Defence Public Sector Undertakings including HAL, BEL, BEML and Ordnance Factories Board (OFB).

Holiday weekend claims 41 lives on Polish roads

Warsaw - The All Saints' holiday weekend claimed 41 lives, while 533 were injured as 1,416 drivers were pulled over for drunk- driving across Poland, Polish media reported on Monday.

Poles celebrated the Christian holidays of All Saints' Day on Saturday and All Souls' Day on Sunday. Christians traditionally visit the graves of relatives on the two days.

Many visited cemeteries to put candles and flowers on the graves of their loved ones, often travelling for hours and making several stops to visit relatives.

Weekend fog made road conditions worse, police said, and many of the accidents involved drivers breaking the speed limit.

New Polish football boss faces criticism, eyes new Euro 2012 co-host

Warsaw - The newly-elected head of the Polish football federation (PZPN) faced criticism Friday that he wouldn't rid the sport of corruption.

Former Polish football great Grzegorz Lato replaced Michal Listkiewicz as president of the ailing PZPN on Thursday, promising to "clear" the sport of corruption. He also needs to fully overcome a recent spur with football's governing body FIFA.

But Lato quickly came under fire - mainly from politicians - that he would do little to change the scandal-ridden federation.

Slawomir Nowak, top aide to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said those who had ideas to improve the organization lost, and lost noticeably.

US General: US wants missile base in Poland by 2012

Warsaw - General Henry Obering said the United States wants an anti-missile base in Poland by 2012, and would ratify the deal even this year, Polish local media reported on Wednesday.

Obering, who is director of the US Missile Defence Agency, was visiting northern Poland on Wednesday to tour the future site of the missile base and meet with local officials. He said the 400-million dollar investment would boost the region's economy.

Polish vice-minister of Defence Stanislaw Jerzy Komorowski said that Poland also wants a quick ratification of the deal, reported the Polish Press Agency, but had doubts it could be done by the end of 2008.

Poland marks end of mission in Iraq

Warsaw - Poland marked the end of its mission in Iraq with a ceremony on Wednesday to welcome the last returning contingent of soldiers in the northwestern city of Szczecin.

Some 100 Polish soldiers landed Tuesday morning at a nearby airport, marking the end of the country's five-year mission.

"There is no good war," Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at the ceremony. "War always brings evil, blood, suffering and casualties, but the sacrifices of a soldier for his country has the deepest meaning."

Tusk said the mission served Poland's defence, and that the soldiers left Iraq safer than it was five years ago. Tusk had promised a quick withdrawal during his election campaign.
