Warsaw - Poland's Constitutional Tribunal was to settle a spat Friday on who represents the country at European Union summits, after a jostle for power among Polish leaders that forced one in October to charter his own plane.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked the tribunal to resolve the conflict that's part of a larger, years-long power struggle between the two political rivals.

The tribunal will decide if President Lech Kaczynski can decide for himself to take part in EU summits, or if the prime minister has the final word.

Warsaw - Hundreds of miners, shipyard workers and medical rescuers marched in the Polish capital Thursday against what they charged were the government's "anti-labour politics."

Metalworkers and trade unionists were also in the crowd that demonstrated at the economy and health ministries.

Warsaw  - A highway in northeastern Poland will be built along a new route to avoid harming valuable marshlands, Environment Minister Maciej Nowicki said on Tuesday.

The new route will only be 2 kilometres longer and also cheaper than the controversial proposal cutting through the scenic Rospuda Valley, Nowicki said.

The highway caused controversy for several years between ecologists and local residents who wanted it built quickly to ease traffic congestion, the Polish Press Agency reported.

Warsaw - Unemployment in Poland rose to 10.9 per cent in February and was up 0.4 per cent from the previous month, the Central Statistical Office said on Tuesday.

Retail sales were down 1.6 per cent in February compared to a year ago, the statistics office said.

The number of building permits in January and February also fell by 9.6 per cent compared to that same period last year in a country that's increasingly feeling the effects of the global economic recession.

Warsaw - A 46-year-old man called the "Polish Fritzl" took the stand Friday after he allegedly raped his daughter repeatedly and kept her prisoner for six years.

Krzysztof B. faces charges of repeatedly raping his daughter using violence and threats, and physically and emotionally abusing his family.

The proceedings are being held behind closed doors in the eastern city of Bialystok, reported the Polish Press Agency PAP.
