Gorkha National Liberation Front to boycott pollsSiliguri, Apr 13 : The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), an organisation which is demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland to be carved out of West Bengal, announced its boycott of the upcoming national polls.

"Neither NDA nor UPA can bring the demand of Gorkhaland true for us. GNLF''s decision to boycott the polls will be a decisive factor for both the Congress and the BJP in the hills in the upcoming elections with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate to be the ultimate gainer," said Subhas Gishing, president, GNLF.

EC bans political graffiti in SiliguriSiliguri, Mar 26 : The Election Commission has imposed a ban on wall graffiti for campaigning.

After receiving complaints from the public regarding the misuse of walls for campaigning, an order was issued by the Election Commission under the Municipal and Panchayat Act 2006.

Under this act, no political party is allowed to write campaigns on the walls of government buildings.

Violence breaks out in Siliguri

West Bengal, SiliguriSiliguri, Feb. 7, : Violence broke out in Siliguri during a 24-hour strike called by an outfit demanding autonomy on Saturday.

The indigenous Gorkha people have been demanding a separate state within West Bengal.

Police officials said the situation turned violent in Siliguri when the locals chased armed protesters under the banner of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

The shutdown was called to protest the recent violence on tribal people in the State.

Police officials said 12 people were arrested for inciting violence.

Tribals call for a 24-hour strike in Bengal

Bird flu hits poultry business in West BengalSiliguri, Jan 6 : Poultry business has been hit hard due to bird flu in West Bengal.

The spread of deadly H5N1 avian influenza across the state has led to mass culling of birds. The sale and movement of poultry has been prohibited.

Poultry farm owners said that they would be completely ruined if it continues for a long time.

"The bird flu hits us every year and due to this we are suffering heavy loses. We will be completely ruined if it continues like this," said Som, a farm owner.

West Bengal reports fresh outbreak of bird flu

West BengalSiliguri (West bengal), Jan. 3 :Health and veterinary workers in West Bengal''s Siliguri region have started culling poultry birds after a reports of a fresh outbreak of the H5N1 virus that layman terms translates into bird flu.

The main epicenter of the flu has been fixed at Binay Krishna Pally off Siliguri in the District of Darjeeling. The latest outbreak of the virus in poultry is the fourth in West Bengal since 2007.

Bird flu first broke out in India in 2006 and millions of chicken and ducks had been culled to contain the virus.
