Aid agencies suspend withdrawal from conflict zones in Sri Lanka Colombo : Aid agencies suspend the withdrawal of staff from conflict zones in northern Sri Lanka, following strong protests from civilians in the region, a local newspaper said Sunday.

United Nations agencies and other organizations started pulling out on Tuesday to comply with orders from the government as fighting intensified in the rebel-controlled northern part of the country.

The government cited safety concerns in directing them to recall their staffs.

Tamil rebel aircraft shot down off north-eastern Sri Lanka Colombo - A Tamil rebel aircraft returning after dropping bombs on an Air Force complex was shot down by a fighter jet Tuesday morning in north-eastern Sri Lanka, a military spokesman said.

The rebel aircraft had dropped bombs at the Air Force base in Vavuniya, 240 kilometres north of the capital, and was shot down off Mullaitivu, 60 kilometres from the targeted base.

There were no immediate details about any damage caused by the rebel bombing at the Air Force base.

Casualties mount in fighting in northern Sri Lanka Colombo – Sri Lanka's military said it had killed 37 Tamil separatist rebels Thursday amid mounting casualties on both sides in fierce fighting in northern Sri Lanka.

Both the military and the rebels said Thursday that heavy fighting had taken place over the past two days in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, where government troops have been advancing into rebel-controlled areas.

Troops capture rebel stronghold in northern Sri Lanka

Sri LankaColombo - Government troops were closing in on a Tamil rebel stronghold in northern Sri Lanka Wednesday, military officials said.

Troops were heading towards Mallawi, a town that served as an administrative centre for Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) rebels, 290 kilometres north-east of the capital, a Defence Ministry statement said late Tuesday.

Parts of Mallawi town were captured on Monday, but more areas surrounding the town needed to be captured to take control of the area, it said.
