Sri Lanka needed 307 to win against India, but could not do so, as the Indian team displayed a fine performance of endurance and expertise.

The dejected home captain of Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene, said that losing three early wickets in their second innings was responsible for the team's debacle.

South Asian heads of state meet in Colombo for regional summit

Colombo - The heads of state of eight South Asian nations opened a two day regional summit in the Sri Lanka capital of Colombo on Saturday where issues ranging from environment to poverty are being discussed.

The event is being held under tight security after the government rejecting a truce declared by the Tamil rebels of the Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa opening the event called for regional co-operation in combating terrorism and stability in the region.

"There are not good terrorists and bad terrorists. We need to eliminate terrorism," Rajapaksa said.

India and Pakistan hold talks on sidelines of SAARC

India & PakistanColombo, July 31 : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee met his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the SAARC summit to discuss the recent blasts in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and the suicide attack on Indian Embassy in Kabul.

After the conclusion of meeting, both ministers told reporters that bilateral issues were discussed in detail, which will be conveyed to their respective Prime Ministers’.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani premier Yousuf Raza Gilani will be attending the SAARC summit on

Saturday and they are expected to meet on the sidelines.

Sri Lanka to suspend domestic flights to Jaffna during SAARC

Colombo, July 31: Domestic flights to northern Jaffna are likely to be suspended during the 15th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit.

SAARC leaders are meeting in Colombo between August 1 and August 3.

Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority Director General Parakrama Dissanayake said that during these days, flights by domestic carriers between Colombo and Jaffna would be suspended for security reasons.

Meanwhile, a heavy security blanket has been imposed across Colombo for the summit.

Sri Lankan defence forces have been placed on high alert for possible attacks by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the summit. The military is also on alert.

Pranab Mukherjee in Colombo for SAARC Council of Ministers meeting

ColomboExternal Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, July 31: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee arrived here last night to participate in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Council of Ministers meeting.

Sri Lanka's Deputy Foreign Minister MK Hussain Bahila and Indian High Commissioner Alok Prasad received Mukherjee at the Colombo airport.
