Srinagar, (Uttarakhand), May 3 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the Congress Party is extremely shrewd and is misleading the people by telling them false things.
"Congress is extremely shrewd and they think that public is in their pockets. They are misleading the people and making false promises. They first come and join their hands in front of you and as soon as they win, they start looting the country," said Modi, while addressing a rally in Uttarakhand.
Dehradun, Feb 1 : Union Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat was Saturday named the new chief minister of Uttarakhand, Congress party leaders said.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi chose Rawat after outgoing chief minister Vijay Bahuguna moved a resolution at a meeting of Congress legislators here authorising her to select his successor.
Central observers Janardan Dwivedi, Ambika Soni and Ghulam Nabi Azad, who were present at the meeting, conveyed the message to the party high command.
Since Gandhi is on a tour in Karnataka, it took some time in getting across to her, Dwivedi told media persons.
Dehradun, Dec 15 : Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Sunday targeted the Congress government in Uttarakhand while urging people to give him a chance to serve the country.
"You've experimented a lot, trust us once. I promise we will do everything to fulfill your dreams," Modi said while addressing a rally here.
He said there was lot of water in the hills but still there was darkness in the country.
Dehradun, Aug 26 : India must explore alternative energy sources as its conventional resources are "inadequate" for sustaining high levels of consumption, President Pranab Mukherjee said here Monday.
"India is the fourth-biggest consumer of energy in the world, after the US, China and Russia. To sustain high levels of consumption, our energy resources are inadequate. We must explore alternative energy models to reduce our dependence on conventional sources," Mukherjee said while addressing the annual convocation of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies here.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Monday refused to declare 5,748 missing people as dead; saying that they were only being ‘presumed to be dead’.
However, Mr. Bahuguna also declared that the government would continue with its scheme to provide ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the presumed to be dead.
He added that the ongoing search operations for finding the missing people would also keep running. According to the state government’s official list, a total of 5,748 people are still missing.

Haridwar, May 14 : Social activist Anna Hazare visited Shanti Kunj here, the headquarters of the Gayatri Parivar, and began his Jan Jagran Yatra for Uttarakhand Tuesday.
Speaking at the Mrityunjaya auditorium at the Dev Sanskrati University here, Hazare said he felt "charged" after visiting the campus and called for a change in the system, rather than mere change of power from one party to another.
Urging people to replace all elected representatives who did not work for the welfare of the people, Hazare said the time had come for a corruption-free and people-oriented political system.
Haridwar, May 6 : Having worked for three years to clean rivers within the country, the All-World Gayatri Pariwar (AWGP) will launch a programme May 18 for cleaning the Bagmati river and the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu.
Gayatri Pariwar, a religious and cultural organisation based in Shantikunj, Haridwar, with branches across the world, started the Teerth Shudhhi Abhiyan (pilgrim spots purification process) from Rameshwaram Temple in Tamil Nadu three years back.
It has since taken up the cleaning of about 10 Hindu pilgrimage centres and nine rivers across India.
Dehradun, Mar 7 : Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will visit Uttarakhand capital Dehradun on Friday to take stock of the party''s affairs in the state.
Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Dhirendra Pratap was quoted by media, as saying that all preparations for Gandhi’s visit are complete, and added that state party leaders and activists were looking forward to Gandhi’s arrival with enthusiasm.
According to reportsd, Gandhi will arrive in Dehradun at about 9 a. m. He will meet party office bearers in two sessions at different city hotels. (ANI)

Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Jan 14 : Devotees have gathered in large numbers for the Maha Kumbh Mela that began in Haridwar on Thursday morning on the auspicious occasion of ''Makar Sakranti''.
Despite severe cold and fog, over 25 lakh people are expected to gather at Har-ki-Pouri for a holy dip.
Officials claimed that around eight lakh people have already reached Haridwar.

Dehradun, Jan 7 - Uttarakhand has set up 31 temporary hospitals and trained at least 150 doctors to check any swine flu outbreak during Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious congregations in the world that begins Jan 14.
"The central government has already inspected the arrangements. They have also given us a truckload of masks for tackling swine flu during the congregation," Pankaj Jain, chief nodal officer for swine flu in Uttarakhand, told IANS.

Dehradun, Dec 29 : Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' Tuesday sought a high level probe into the charges levelled against veteran Congress leader N. D. Tiwari, who quit as Andhra Pradesh governor Saturday after allegations of his involvement in a sex scandal.
"Considering that such wild allegations have been levelled against a person who has always been held in high esteem, it would be in the fitness of things to get these probed," Pokhriyal told media persons here.
