Chandigarh, Oct 20 : A re-poll held in nine booths of Naurnaund constituency in Hisar district of Haryana threw up a similar figure of over 90 percent polling - as during the Oct 13 assembly elections, officials said Tuesday.

Sources in the Election Commission said the re-poll was ordered because the turnout in these booths was more than 90 percent and the poll panel wanted to be doubly sure about the massive turnout.

However, the district administration and the state electoral officer said the re-poll was not because of the huge turnout but due to some report sent to the Election Commission of India.

"The returning officer and observer of these booths submitted a report to the Election Commission of India. Based on the report, the commission ordered a re-poll. I do not think that the huge turnout of voters on Oct 13 was a reason behind this," Sajjan Singh, chief electoral officer of Haryana, told IANS Tuesday.

"There was no breach of law and order in this area on Oct 13," he added.

The voting percentage in these nine booths Oct 13 was 93.30 percent, and in Monday's re-poll it was 92.26 percent. The overall voting percentage of this constituency Oct
13 was 80.72 percent, while after re-polling it was 80.66 percent.

O. P. Sheoran, deputy commissioner of Hisar, told IANS: "The administration does not know any reason behind the re-poll. The decision was taken by the Election Commission based on some report."

The counting of votes will take place Oct 22.(IANS)
