Revolt by killer robots - a threat to human beings

killer roboScientists, once over-enthusiastic about artificial intelligence, are apprehensive of a revolt by killer robots, a situation widely used in fiction films, such as the Terminator series, till now. Experts warned against creating ultra smart machines that can prove fatal for human beings, endangering life on earth.

Eric Horvitz, key researcher at Microsoft said: "These are powerful technologies that could be used in good ways or scary ways." Mr. Horvitz is the organizer of a conference in Monterey Bay, California, under the guidance of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Other scientists admitted that artificial intelligence now pertains merely to creating intelligent machines, while adequate attention is not being given to upgrade safety level in smart robots, performing human-like functions.

Alan Winfield, a professor at the University of the West of England said: "We’re rapidly approaching the time when new robots should undergo tests, similar to ethical and clinical trials for new drugs, before they can be introduced."

It has been uncovered that a US firm is working on a research to form robotic nurses for patients to get sympathy.  This "nursebots" can dehumanize the living spirit which is a cause of worry for the scientists.
