RIM offering 50 percent discount on PlayBook tabletCanadian firm, Research in Motion (RIM), which is the maker of the popular BlackBerry family of smartphones, is offering a 50 percent discount on its PlayBook tablets in order to compete with the likes of Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

A company spokesman said that the 16 GB model of the PlayBook will be sold for Rs 13,490 in the Indian market instead of its regular price of Rs 27,990. On the other hand, the 32 GB model, which is normally priced at Rs 32,990 will be available for Rs 15,990 and 64 GB model is being offered for Rs 24,490 instead of Rs 37,990.

RIM has been struggling to compete in the market and is seeing a falling market share around the world. It is facing difficult competition fro Apple and a host of Android makers in the smartphone and tablet markets. The company has been able to sell only 800,000 units of the device globally in the first nine months of financial year 2011-12.

There are talks of a possible takeover of the company by technology giants. Its share prices have fallen drastically in 2011 after it failed to maintain its place among the leading smartphone maker globally.
