School meals are healthier than ever before, says CDC Director

A new study, released on Friday, has found that schools have been serving kids more than just chicken nuggets and tater tots. As per the data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, most of the schools offered whole grains for breakfast (97.2%) and lunch (94.4%) each day. “School meals are healthier now than ever before”, says Tom Frieden, CDC Director.

The data found that around 80% schools offered two or more vegetables, showing around 18% growth from 2000. Schools that served two or more fruits everyday for lunch showed a rise of almost 10% from 2000.

Over 90% of schools across the nation have met federal standards, which the US Department of Agriculture updated in 2012 for including more healthy choices for students. The focus of the data was on the 2000, 2006, and 2014 surveys done by the School Health Policies and Practices Study.

According to the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity the National School Lunch Program, based on these standards, offers subsidized meals to over 30 million children each day. Students eat around half of their daily calories at school, often because of the federal school meal program. It is not just the schools that serving healthy food as even the kids are also consuming it.

Even after the raised concerns over increased food waste, following the mandate to offer more fruits and vegetables, a March study has discovered that from 2012 to 2014 there was no increase in plate waste.
