Scientists claim to have created artificial sperm in lab

spermA recent study by the scientists in Newcastle has started off a series of debates within the medical community. These scientists claim that they have created an artificial sperm in the laboratory. The artificial sperm has been created with the stem cells taken from a few days old embryo.

The research team claims that this new invention will be a blessing for men with fertility problems. Moreover, the new study will also help in finding the cause of infertility in men so that suitable treatments could be developed.

Different medical experts have given contrasting opinions on the new study. Some medicos have praised the study. While some medical experts have raised doubts regarding the maturity of the artificially-created sperm; the research team claims that the sperm is fully mature and mobile.

Professor Karim Nayernia at Newcastle University and the NorthEast England Stem Cell Institute says: "It will also allow scientists to study how cells involved in reproduction are affected by toxins, for example, why young boys with leukaemia who undergo chemotherapy can become infertile for life - and possibly lead us to a solution."

The research team claims that it will take at least five years to perfect this technique.
