Senator Chuck Schumer urging FDA to investigate Caffeinated Peanut Butter
Senator Chuck Schumer has expressed concern over caffeinated peanut butter. The senator said a new brand could give customers a dangerous jolt, and could also make children too caffeinated. Schumer wants Feds to investigate Steem Peanut Butter.
Two tablespoons of Steem Peanut Butter, which was launched in 2014, can have caffeine equal to caffeine in two cans of Red Bull. It means one serving contains 170 milligrams of caffeine. The product is sold mostly online, but there are some small stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut that sell the product.
About the product, Schumer said, “This may look like an ordinary jar of peanut butter, and it may cost the same as a jar of peanut butter, but the fact is it’s far more dangerous”.
While defending the caffeinated peanut butter, Steem said the product does not pose any harm to anyone. The feds can investigate it, but the peanut butter is safe when consumers are using it as directed, Steem added.
Schumer said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should take much time to start investing the caffeinated product, which could be dangerous for the athletic and fitness market. The product was launched last year by three friends from Massachusetts.
According to the manufacturers, the product is a combination of protein of peanuts and energy boost of caffeine. They also said that the caffeine in the product is released slowly because the peanut butter takes a long time to digest.
