Shivraj Patil to inaugurate conference on prisons today

Union Home Minister Shivraj PatilNew Delhi, Apr 25: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil will inaugurate the All India Conference of Ministers, Secretaries and Directors or Inspectors General in charge of Prisons here today.

The conference will discuss various subjects related to the management of prisons in the country, various aspects of the draft national policy on prison reforms and the scheme for modernization of prisons.

The agenda of the conference includes existing statutes relating to prisons and the necessary legal reforms, prison infrastructure, correctional administration, security and discipline in prisons, and service conditions of prison personnel.

The participants in the conference will include Minister of State for Home Affairs, Dr Shakeel Ahmed, Union Home Secretary, Madhukar Gupta, senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) apart from Ministers, Secretaries and Directors or Inspectors General in charge of Prisons in different States and UTs.

The last conference on prisons was held in March 2004. (ANI)
