Sigourney Weaver hopes new flick will help gay teens tackle their parents

Sigourney Weaver hopes new flick will help gay teens tackle their parentsWashington, Jan 15 : American actress Sigourney Weaver hopes that her first TV movie `Prayers for Bobby' will help gay teens when they come out about their sexual orientation to their parents.

Weaver plays the real-life mother of tragic gay youth Bobby Griffith, who committed suicide in the 1970s after his religious parents spent years trying to `cure' him.

According to the actress, Leroy Aaron''s book of the same name, from which her new film was adapted, has become a tool some gay youngsters use to help their parents come to terms with their child''s sexuality.

She hopes that her film will also prove helpful for such children.

"Prayers For Bobby is the book kids give their parents when they come out. This (film) will be another way for them to sit down with your family and say, `I have something to talk to you about. Let''s watch a Sigourney Weaver movie'," Contactmusic quoted her as telling TV Guide magazine.

"There are no aliens in it, there are no ghostbusters, but it gets them in the room," she stated.

Weaver visited Mary Griffith, whom she portrays in the film, and admits it was a very emotional day.

"You feel Bobby''s presence in their house," she said.

"They (family) thought that they were doing the right thing - they felt they were saving him and his soul.

"She (Griffith) goes from thinking Bobby''s death is God''s will to feeling responsible, and finally talking to parents so they won''t lose their gay children to this kind of terrible ignorance," she added. (ANI)
