A silent progress on the environmental front – Recycling batteries mandatory

United KingdomUnited Kingdom has a new rule from today - any retailer who sells batteries will also be responsible for their recycling. The move which makes the retailers more responsible for the dumping of old cells, is seen as a positive step towards cleaner environment.

Further addition to this, one who sells over 32kg of batteries per year (about 1 pack of 4 AAs a day) is required to provide a free recycling point for consumers to return their used / flat batteries. Pragmatically speaking, this means that most retailers who sell batteries will now have a collection point; making it easier for everyone to recycle.

The battery recycling scheme is expected to cost manufacturers around £3 million per annum as they are expected to collect and dispose of batteries in the collecting units.

However at the moment, according to the facts Britons recycle just three per cent of the 600 million batteries used every year. If this time (UK already faces fines from the EU for failing to meet targets on reducing landfill) UK fails to meet the target, the Government could face a fine of millions of pounds.

Reading between the lines, we observe it's the developed countries that are always under the scrutiny. They might have acquired unsurpassable heights with their technology but it seems that the after effects are boomeranging back. Mistake of one causes misery to many.
