Soda to be an Absentee on Kids Menu at Dairy Queen
All that fizz will now disappear from the kids menu. In response to the increasing concerns of the parents, the Minneapolis-based fast food chain, Dairy Queen (DQ), is removing soft drinks from kids’ menus, beginning September 1, as the new menu board panels arrive at franchise locations.
According to the statement from the Washington-based Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Dairy Queen would now become yet another restaurant chain to take soda off the kids menu. Already, chains like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Chipotle and Subway have either stopped suggesting soda or removed them from their children's menus altogether.
Consuming Soda has been proven to be an unhealthy habit in a recent documentary called ‘Fed Up’, which stated that calories from a healthier alternative produces results in the body that are very different from the effects that are caused by drinking soda. The documentary explained that the calories from soda are absorbed straight into the liver, causing immediate conversion of sugar to fat and leading to ‘sugar rush’.
William Barrier, Executive Vice President of product development and quality at DQ informed, “Under our recommendation, drinks such as milk and bottled water would solely be listed as menu options at DQ locations. I am pleased to inform you that during our most recent meeting, the Franchise Advisory Council voted unanimously to remove soft drinks from our kids' menu”.
Margo G. Wootan, Nutrition Policy Director, CSPI, applauded Dairy Queen for being responsive to the concerns of parents, who increasingly want choice of soda to be off the kids’ menu without having to say ‘no’ to soda.
Dean Peters, a spokesman for Dairy Queen, commented that the Dairy Queen System shares similar concerns regarding children’s nutrition and has been working toward offering healthier options on the menu.
Ironically, the 84 year old DQ owner, Warren Buffett, claimed earlier this year that he drinks at least five Cokes a day and he loves it!
