Spain detains 41 on child porn charges

Madrid - Spanish police have detained 41 people in 30 provinces on charges of owning and distributing child pornography over the internet, police said Wednesday.

Nineteen others were also indicted. Police searched 59 addresses, seizing computer materials.

The network was discovered on tips from citizens and associations defending children.

The arrests were made public one day after prosecutors toughened their demands concerning a 25-year-old pederast known as Nanysex, for whom they are now seeking
124 years in prison, up from an earlier demand of 39 years, on more than 10 accounts of child abuse.

Police meanwhile informed prosecutors of the existence of a website announcing "an international day of love for children."

About 1,000 people marched in Madrid over the week-end to demand tougher penalties for pederasts. The government says the issue is on its agenda.

Parliament also recently approved the creation of a register of pederasts to prevent cases such as that of Mari Luz Cortes, a 4-year- old girl who was killed by a pederast earlier this year. (dpa)
