Starwood Hotels& Resorts Worldwide Inc. said that it is going to increase the number of its hotels in India. The increase would be by 60 per cent and would be done by 2013.

Starwood has bought over 26 properties where it plans to build its hotels and the work on these projects will start very soon.

The company also revealed that it along with its partners is planning to open three Aloft hotels in India by the end of this year.

Sheraton, Westin and St. Regis are its famous brands. Talking about the new project, Frits van Paasschen, CEO of the hotel company said that India lacks proper hotels and the company is planning to capitalize on this.

He added that at present there are only 100,000 hotel rooms in India. This is much lower than what is present in New York City, where the number is 80,000.

The current announcement is the extension of what Starwood said in March. It had said that it aims to open 300 hotels in the next three to four years time. Starwood also said that it is going to double its properties in China by 2012.
