Manipur is one of the only States in India which is having a strategy on harm reduction to put off the spread of HIV/AIDS, and the tactic appear to give up excellent results.

As per the yearly Report of the Manipur State AIDS Control Society for 2008-2009, the occurrence rate of HIV infection amongst injecting drug-users has revealed a low down by 76.9 per cent in 1997 to 17.9 per cent in 2007.

In today’s time, HIV/AIDS is becoming a familiar word in Manipur, by having the information of HIV/AIDS amongst the adults, women and men being almost universal (99 per cent) as per the National Family Health Survey-111 (2205-2006).

Previously, the major route of HIV transmission was when the injecting equipments were shared among the injecting drug users. Moreover, the outbreak has gone through sexual actions too.

Manipur is amongst the high occurrence States in India with HIV occurrence -rate amongst pregnant women is 1.3 per cent. Much more and deep interior and hilly areas are yet to be helped on.
