Study claims that even Antarctica is affected by Global Warming

Study claims that even Antarctica is affected by Global Warming A latest study has put forward the fact that even Antarctica, which seemed to be unaffected by Global Warming, is also melting.

This new research was published in the journal Nature Geoscience, and it also claims that natural fluctuations are not responsible for the climate change at both poles till date.

Alexey Karpechko, a professor at the University of East Anglia and a co-author of the study released on Thursday, "Our results demonstrate that human activities have already caused significant warming in both Polar Regions."

A team of scientists led by the East Anglia's Nathan Gillet were able to tease apart the internal and external drivers of observed changes at both poles, with the help of new data on land surface temperatures and state-of-the-art computer models to simulate different climate scenarios.

In the older studies, the entire Arctic and Antarctic regions were covered, whereas in the latest study, they focused only on the grid points where precise measurements have been taken.

It led to obtaining of more accurate climate models, and also displayed that the changes in temperatures over the 20th century could only had happened if the result of industrial greenhouse gas emissions, and upper atmosphere ozone depletion, are taken into account.

Andrew Monaghan of the US National Center for Atmospheric Research and David Bromwich, a researcher at Ohio State University said, "Their work demonstrates convincingly what previous studies have suggested -- that humans have indeed contributed to warming in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Knowing the cause of polar climate variability is critical for understanding how the ice sheets will evolve in the 21st century."
