Sudan accuses Chad of supporting rebels

Nairobi/Khartoum  - The Sudanese government said Monday it had proof that Chad was involved in a rebel attack on the Sudanese capital Khartoum, according to news reports.

Rebels who had been taken prisoner identified the body of a Chadian officer killed in the fighting over the weekend, Sudan's ambassador to the United Nations, Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem, told Britain's BBC news channel on Monday.

Sudan broke off diplomatic ties with Chad on Sunday, saying Chad was supporting rebels in the troubled western Sudanese province of Darfur.

Chad has denied supporting rebels in Darfur and said it regretted Sudan's "hasty decision."

The Chadian government has accused Sudan in the past of supporting rebels in eastern Chad.

A spokesman for the rebel militia Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), whose fighters managed to invade the suburbs of Khartoum at the weekend, denied that the group was working with the Chadian military.

Sudanese state television reported that at least 100 people suspected of working with JEM were arrested following the weekend invasion of Khartoum's outer reaches.
