Surgery may be Ultimate Solution to Diabetes

A new study has found that weight-loss surgery is better than lifestyle changes when it comes to treating type-2-diabetes. In the past studies as well, weight loss surgeries sometime have been found to be better at treating the condition than lifestyle interventions.

Study's lead researcher Anita Courcoulas of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said that main thing to know is 'durability of remission over time'. In the study, the researchers included 61 people aged 25 to 55 having type-2-diabetes.

Half of the patients were having class-1 obesity and others were heavier. All were divided into three groups, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass group; laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding group and lifestyle group. After three years, the study researchers found that 40% in the former group and 29% in the latter group and no one in the lifestyle group faced a partial remission of their type-2 diabetes condition.

In fact, three people in the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass group and one in laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding group did not have any diabetes completely. The researchers said that the surgery groups did not require medication for diabetes.

Courcoulas said there is a need to carry out more research on the topic. "I don't know how many studies we need to do to keep comparing the best medical treatment to surgery, but it's clear to me that surgery is the only thing that offers resolution to diabetes", said Dr. Michel Gagner from the Florida International University.
