Sweden's Princess Madeleine to marry

Sweden's Princess Madeleine to marryStockholm  - Swedish Princess Madeleine, the youngest of King Carl Gustaf's and Queen Silvia's three children, has become engaged to her boyfriend Jonas Bergstrom, the royal palace announced Tuesday.

The princess, 27, has been dating Bergstrom since 2002. The couple were later Tuesday to meet the press at the Solliden Palace on the island of Oland off Sweden's east coast, where the royals usually spend part of their summer holidays.

No date for the wedding was set, the palace said in a statement, adding that the king had approved the engagement and has sought approval from the government in accordance with the procedures set out in the Swedish constitution.

The government was due to hold a special meeting Tuesday to formally approve the engagement.

Earlier this year, Crown Princess Victoria announced her engagement to boyfriend Daniel Westling. They are set to marry in June 2010.

Bergstrom, 30, has studied law at Stockholm University and works at a legal firm in Stockholm.

"There will be no wedding until after the crown princess's," palace spokeswoman Nina Eldh told broadcaster TV4 news.

Princess Madeleine, who is third in line to the Swedish throne, has in recent years been involved in work with the World Childhood Foundation founded by her mother, Queen Silvia. (dpa)
