Taiwan stocks rise more than 6 per cent by mid-session

Taiwan Stock ExchangeTaipei - Taiwan stocks surged more than 6 per cent by mid-session Thursday after the central bank cut interest rates and on positive signs in Taiwan-China ties.

The benchmark TAIEX rose 266.31 points, or 6.04 per cent, to 4,672.83 in mid-morning trading after the central bank cut interest rates by
0.25 per cent, and due to positive signs in Taiwan-China ties.

Taiwan and China will hold an important dialogue November 3-7 to discuss expanding ties. On Wednesday, Taiwan announced it would send a former vice president to the up-coming APEC summit, which obviously has received Beijing's approval.

Lien will be the highest-ranking Taiwan delegate to the APEC leaders' summit as China has barred Taipei from sending its president to previous APEC summits. Analysts believe China's approval of Lien to attend the November 22-23 APEC summit in Lima, Peru, is Beijing's goodwill gesture to Taiwan ahead of the Beijing-Taipei dialogue. (dpa)
