Trai dials trouble for fresh telcos on services rollout
In January 2008 the nine fresh telecom operators were approved licenses but now it seems that they would lose their approval.
In coming few days the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is setting up to praise to the government to charge fine on the companies which are not meeting their level obligations, if not then to cancel their licenses.
Trai chairman JS Sarma told FE that they are investigative the level record of the new operators and going to recommend that penalty be imposed as per the license conditions on those failing to meet the rollout obligations. In cases where the three-year deadline is over, they would even recommend cancellation of the licenses.
Sarma said one of the important roles of the regulator was to make sure that the terms and conditions of the license were met by all operators, and therefore it decided to come across into the rollout confirmation of new operators.
Once Trai submits its recommendations to the department of telecommunications (DoT), the latter would have to take a final call on the concern.
