Two Taiwanese arrested in Indonesia over drugs trafficking

IndonesiaJakarta  - Indonesian authorities have arrested two Taiwanese nationals for trying to smuggle nearly seven kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine into the country, local media reports said Sunday.

The two, identified as Kuo Ting Liu, 23, and Huang Yu Lum, 26, were arrested on Friday by custom officers at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International airport, soon after they arrived on a China Airlines flight from Hong Kong, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

Bachtiar, chief of the airport's customs office, was quoted as saying that officers seized 6.9 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally called "shabu-shabu," estimated to be worth at about 10 billion rupiah (1.08 million dollars) on the local market.

The drugs confiscation was the latest drug seizure by Indonesian authorities in recent weeks to have involved foreign nationalities.

In late February, the Indonesian police arrested five foreigners - three Taiwanese, a Singaporean and a Dutch - and one local, suspected to be members of an international drug syndicate. During the raid, they seized 600,000 ecstasy pills worth up to 6.4 million dollars.

In November, police confiscated some 822,000 ecstasy pills in two different raids in western and northern Jakarta, in which the police also seized an equivalent of 866,000 dollars and 581,000 Hong Kong dollars in cash. Two Indonesians and two Malaysian were nabbed in that raid. (dpa)
