US companies to announce $140 billion in new investments to decrease their carbon footprints

Executives from thirteen major US corporations are all set to make an announcement today relating to commitments for decreasing their carbon footprints. The private commitments will set a tone for a United Nations (UN) climate-change summit later this year in Paris.

Apple, Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company, and Goldman Sachs Group are among many other companies set to join Secretary of State John Kerry and top administration officials at the White House for the announcement.

The companies have vowed that they will not bolster the effort to reduce carbon content in atmosphere only by cutting emissions, providing finances to environmentally-focused companies and reducing water consumption, but by also producing 1,600 megawatts of new, renewable energy. The power is enough to meet the needs of nearly 1.3 million homes.

As per a statement made by the White House, announcement for a second round of similar pledges is likely to be made later this fall from additional companies.

"As the world looks toward global climate negotiations in Paris this December, American leadership at all levels will be essential", the White House said in a fact sheet detailing the announcement.

Ms. Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, gave a clarion message by releasing an energy strategy that she takes the issue of climate change and carbon emission very seriously. Not only does she take the issue seriously, she even wants to put more efforts than Mr. Obama to fix it, she said.
