US Ebola Survivor Nina Pham Files Lawsuit against Texas Health Resources

Ebola survivor nurse Nina Pham, 26, also the first patient to be diagnosed in the United States with Ebola on Monday, filed a lawsuit against parent company of the Dallas hospital, Texas Health Resources where her treatment was going on.

Pham on Monday said in a statement that the hospital lied to Congress that its staff was well trained to handle the deadly virus.

Nina Pham, who was an intensive care unit nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, said she was only ‘Googled’ by her manager in the last fall that she would be treating a patient suspected of having Ebola. She said only this small piece of information was given to protect herself from the deadly virus.

Pham said in her lawsuit that the day after getting the information, the patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, tested positive for the disease.

As per sources, Duncan contracted Ebola in his native Liberia but started showing symptoms during a trip to the United States. He later died at the hospital.

However, Pham and another nurse who treated Duncan, Amber Vinson, contracted the disease and recovered later.
In a statement released by Pham’s lawyer, she felt she had no choice but to sue the hospital’s parent company, i.e. Texas Health Resources.

Pham in her lawsuit said that she is presently quite concerned about her health in the near future. She doubts whether she will ever be able to return to being a critical care nurse due to the level of stress and anxiety of the trauma she experienced so far.

Wendell Watson, a company spokesman, said Texas Health Resources believes that the matter can be resolved. Meanwhile, Vinson's attorney, Steve Malouf, said he presently has no clues whether Vinson is also planning to file a suit against the hospital system.

In addition, the lawsuit also claims that Texas Health Resources violated Pham’s privacy and used her as a ‘PR pawn’ without her permission or prior knowledge.
