Washington  - A key gauge of the US economy climbed faster than expected in September in the latest sign that the world's largest economy is on the road to recovery, a private research group said Thursday.

The New York-based Conference Board reported a 1-per-cent rise in its index of leading economic indicators. It is the sixth consecutive increase and comes after a
0.4-per-cent rise in August.(dpa)
