Vedanta's Orissa dream comes to an end
Things are just not going well for Anil Agarwal's Vedanta Resources. After a long wait, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh has finally rejected the company's mining lease due to environment clearance.
He has also refused to give the company approval for the six-fold expansion of its refiner. This means that the all of the 11 projects of Vedanta, some ongoing and some in the initial stages, have been stalled. This projects are now officially illegal.
An estimate shows that Agarwal had spent rupees 1, 67, 000 crore for being able to keep these projects going. But now the so-called philanthropist will have to suspend his work in Lanjigarh district of Orissa.
The projects are now going to be denied the much needed bauxite from even 14 mines in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
Ramesh has even said, "There is no environment clearance for bauxite mining in Jharkhand."
Such a step has come even after the company was able to get 'in-approval' permission from the Supreme Court to start its work in the state. The current CM of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik is in full support of Vedanta.
