Wal-Mart registers a new company in India

Wal-Mart registers a new company in IndiaMoving ahead with its plans to enter India's lucrative multi-brand retail market, Wal-Mart has registered a new company called `Wal-Mart India Private Ltd' in the country.

According to data revealed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the new entity was registered last week, on January 15, 2014.

After parting ways with India's Bharti Group in October 2013, the American retail giant had said that it was studying the viability of India's foreign direct investment (FDI) policy in the multi-brand retail segment before finalizing plans to announce its entry.

The joint venture between the two companies, Bharti Wal-Mart Private Ltd, was catering to wholesale stores under the Best Price Modern Wholesale brand.  It was not catering to retail consumers.

After parting with Bharti Group in October last year, Wal-Mart in December gained the Competition Commission of India's (CCI's) permission for buying Bharti Group's 50 per cent stake in their joint venture.

According to lobbying disclosure reports filed by Wal-Mart in the United States, the company has been lobbying with U. S. lawmakers since 2008 for facilitating its entry into India's multi-brand retail market.  The American retail giant is now in search for a partner in India.
